Files of the Clerks of Court of Iowa County including records of territorial courts of the area of southern Wisconsin formerly in Saint Clair County, Territory of Illinois; Crawford County, Territory of Michigan; and Iowa County, Territory of Wisconsin. Papers include correspondence, inquests, transcripts of testimony, writs, tax lists, applications for licenses, memoranda of accounts, receipts for arms issued in Blackhawk War, manumissions of slaves, naturalization papers, and other records showing the functions of courts in territorial and early statehood affairs and including names of James D. Doty, Moses M. Strong, Henry C. Dodge, William S. Hamilton, Morgan L. Martin, and Zachary Taylor. Most documents are dated prior to 1848 and only one folder is dated 1854-1869.
